A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is an energy storage system. The system uses batteries to store sustainably generated energy. These battery systems are innovative solutions that enhance the efficiency of large-scale sustainable energy production. A BESS consists of one or more batteries for storing energy for later use and consumption. These batteries are equipped with smart technologies, such as inverters, sensors, and a control system, to efficiently manage energy storage and consumption based on both current and future energy needs.

BESS come in various types and sizes. The biggest difference in battery energy storage systems is the type of battery used in the system. Most battery systems are based on lithium – think of the lithium-ion batteries in electric cars and our phones. Energy Labs.AI systems are typically based on a different type of battery: lithium iron phosphate (LFP) or lithium titanate oxide (LTO). 

LFP batteries offer businesses many opportunities to develop a battery energy storage system that suits their needs and sustainable goals. A BESS with an LFP battery is highly safe, making it suitable for installation inside or directly next to a building. Additionally, the flexible systems are available in any size: from compact cabinets to shipping containers, depending on the desired capacity. Since fewer scarce materials are required in the production process of LFP batteries, this type of business battery is the most sustainable and future-proof solution for (large-scale) energy storage. The cells in this system do not contain expensive and flammable materials like cobalt or manganese. Since iron phosphate has much higher thermal stability, the cells are less likely to overheat and become fire hazardous. Additionally, LFP batteries can withstand more charge cycles before their capacity noticeably decreases.

LTO battery is a type of lithium-ion battery that uses lithium titanate as the anode material instead of the traditional graphite. This chemistry offers several distinct advantages. LTO batteries can charge significantly faster than other lithium-ion batteries, making them ideal for applications where quick recharging is essential. They have an extremely long lifespan, often lasting tens of thousands of charge-discharge cycles, which helps reduce long-term costs. They have a higher thermal stability and are less prone to overheating or catching fire, even under extreme conditions and having a maintain stable performance in a wider range of temperatures, from very hot to very cold environments.

However, LTO batteries generally have lower energy density compared to other lithium-ion chemistries like LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate), meaning they take up more space for the same energy storage capacity. Additionally, they tend to have higher initial costs.
